What Is the Difference Between FDA-Approved and FDA-Regulated?

This is an important distinction that patients should understand:

FDA-Approved

Means the FDA has reviewed clinical trial data and formally approved a product or device for specific indications. Examples include pharmaceutical drugs and certain medical devices.

FDA-Regulated 

Means the product or practice falls under FDA oversight and must comply with specific regulations, but may not have gone through the formal approval process for every specific use. Human cells, tissues, and cellular and tissue-based products (HCT/Ps) — such as stem cells and exosomes — are FDA-regulated under 21 CFR Part 1271.

FDA-Cleared

Means a device has been determined by the FDA to be substantially equivalent to a legally marketed device. Many shockwave therapy devices and PRP preparation systems are FDA-cleared.
